Holding something small so it can be filed  is what a hand vise is designed for. All I have ever used for over 50 years. Why make everything so darn hard?
Will the hand vise capture the tumbler and the fly as shown? The ability to work with the "fly" in position makes the job SO  much easier
and some people have a problem with very small parts due to eye problems and inexperience.Mostly inexperience and how many people even on this forum have ever actually MADE a lock that required a "fly".

Just don't bother trying the sticky fly paper, that stuff didn't hold worth a darn...
