Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett video
« on: November 03, 2009, 01:42:16 AM »
Guys,
I am teaching a American History class and teaching about longrifles also. The History Channel made a program about the bios of Boone and Crockett a few years ago. They no longer make this. Would any of you loan me the copy so our class could see it?

Also, if you know of some other good quality video-dvds out there on early American history, please let us know.

Andy, welcome to the forum.  A couple things.  first we don't know your location, and we don't know the grade level of your students.  It's amazing how history can be different in different parts of the country.  Secondly the time periods are slightly different between Crockett, and Boone.  Also there's Simon Kenton of Ohio, another larger than life figure.  Two recent movies, portray some what properly flintlocks, though fictional history.  The Patriot with Mel Gibson, and Last of the Mohicans, with Daniel Day Lewis, fictional characters, based on a historical period of time. If you google videos, and any of these characters you might get lucky.

Bill,
Thanks for the reply. My students are 11th grade and we are in West Texas.( 100% redneck) We are doing a straight US history course but they (its a boy's class) are really fired up about frontier history. We are doing some hands on stuff---making fire with a strike a lite, etc. They love it!

The program I saw on the history channel was divided in half---one part about Boone , the other about Crockett.

Thanks for the heads up on the other movies!

What you are referencing was a video produced by A&E Television Networks for The History Channel in 2001.  It was called "Boone and Crockett - The Hunter Heroes".  It was a 100 min. program, broken up into 2 parts, half covering Boone's life, & half Crockett's.  I have an older VHS version, and thought it was very well done.  Would be great for a classroom setting.  You can probably google it and find a DVD copy for sale.  I think it is still being offered.

It has some of our own inner circle of living history folks and muzzleloading types in it who you might recognize & some may linger here or on other web sites (2 examples, Jim Dressler sat in as the aging Boone, and Mark Baker played Crockett, and both looked extremely similar to period portraits of the men they portrayed).

Google (Boone and Crockett the hunter heroes" will give you several locations for the tapes.  Check the prices, because there are several sales going on now and up to 75% savings.  Good info for your class.

You can contact your local library for a copy.  They can inter-library request one.  Your school library should be able to get a coy the same way as well.

I have used our state library for many such requests and its pretty amazing the depth of those type of videos you can find.

Check out  "The Longhunter  Series" with Mark Baker from American Pioneer Video.  I've used them in teaching and they go over big with this age group.

I've been thinking about this some, I think you need to search for the Draper Manuscripts, Mark Baker (IIRC) uses this as a resource / reference to his articles on William Hall which he wrote for Muzzleloader magazine.  this manuscript is interviews with the participants in frontier events.  I think that most people just romanticise the frontier experience when in fact it was a brutal life.

Lets look at William Hall for a moment, at 10 he and his brother where ambushed by Indians, brother instantly tomahawked by two Indians before he could move, William took off running and escaped to the house, where by luck a few folks had gathered, they provided covering fire over his head at the pursuing Indians on his escape to the house.  A year and a half later (not sure of exact time frame but very closely following the first ambush) another brother and his father where killed in another ambush while protecting the family retreat, again William escaped, in told I think William said in these interviews that 10 of his relatives where killed by Indians and a brother in law badly wounded twice in a few years span.  These events took place in Tn.

Militia duty in the these remote settlements was more often than not the mundane activity of an escort for families and goods being transported between forts.  The Indians targeted small groups of travelers and the protection of people and goods was vital to the survival of these out lying settlements.  In addition farmers where frequently attacked while at work, so a firearm was always near at hand.  In between all the moments of terror was the backbreaking work of clearing land, growing crops, chopping wood etc necessary to survive.

Another topic to discuss is the role of these small fortifications, they provided the necessary protection against Indian attack.  In these areas the defense only needed to be against smallarms fire (cannon attacks are known but uncommon) so a simple log stockade, blockhouse and dwelling sufficed.  Fire was the biggest threat, but history proves that these fortifications.

If you would like to discuss the rifle and how it was viewed at the time, I think you could talk about the design of the rococo carving / brass furniture being a fashion statement as well as the makers signature of quality work.  One thing not mentioned very often is how the rifle / musket promoted the industrial revolution (well my opinion anyway) in the fact that originally they where individually hand built, but the need for more weapons, faster sooner quicker eventually evolved into the system on interchangeable parts, this laid the groundwork for industrialization.

Do you have a netflix account? They have it in their collection. You could rent it from them. I love that documentary... it is like watching a two-hour reenactment. Highly recommend it.
