Mortimer gun book

Is this book a good reference with a lot of good detailed photos? I already have “Great British Gunmakers”, “Griffon,Tow & Bailes” and “The Mantons”. Is it a good supplement these books? It is pretty pricey.

I am very keen on firearms made by the Mortimer family, owning several over the last 60 years. I was delighted when this book was published and bought  a copy immediately; what a disappointment. The books by Keith Neal and David Back set the standard regarding quality of text and photography and this falls far short. I sold the book on as soon as I had finished reading it.

Hi Richard,
It is mediocre.  The photos are poor quality and do not show much detail.  For a maker, it is a waste of money but it does contain a lot of historical biographical detail about the Mortimers so I've kept it.  I would recommend passing it up and buying either O' Sullivan and bailey's book on Wogdon or Eric Griffin's book on the "Griffins of Bond Street".

I too had that book. I found it educational as Smart Dog said but it lacked in photos of the guns Iwas hoping to see.

I don't usually do this but it was so long ago that I don't think anyone will care. That was one of the first books we published and it suffered a major problem when the printer didn't use the paper we'd specified. It was supposed to be printed on coated paper. If he had, the photos would have been better although, given what we've learned since then, they would have been up to our current standards. It's one of the major reasons we decided to take our own pictures most of the time. To this day, very few authors submit really good photos...

The text, however, is exhaustive...covering the entire Mortimer family.
