Wow, that is really special! The toe plate inletting intrigued me with the toe plate narrower than the outside edges. That seems like it would have been extremely tedious with such a fine line of wood along the length of the plate.

I call this type of toe plate a tombstone style plate. I use this style plate on a lot of my rifles. You do have to be careful with the inletting but with good hard sugar maple you can do it. When I use walnut I don’t go so thin on the edges.

Jim, that is a truly handsome rifle! I have one of these kits and can't decide how I want to finish it. Did you use a scraped finish instead of sandpaper. I really like it.   Dan

Yes it is a scraped surface. Many of the original rifle I have seen had a scraped surface so that is what I try replicate. Nothing wrong with a sanded surface though it’s just not what I choose to do.

That's the type of rifle that I really love.  Iron mounted, .45, Southern build and finished so superbly.  You built a gorgeous rifle that I wish I owned.  Someone will get to rejoice with that beauty.

Truly a wonderful rifle!!! In East Tennessee, where I was raised, all muzzle loading rifles were referred to as "hog rifles" until the caliber exceeded something on the order of .50+, then they became a "bear gun". Go figure??
