details on a J Rupp
« on: October 22, 2022, 04:42:55 PM »
I spent yesterday at the Rock Ford exhibit, overall a great show,
I was fascinated with the John Rupp rifle and a few of its details that I had never noticed before. The first was the ramrod. I have no idea if it is original to the gun, a copy of the original as a working replacement or a new replacement. From the muzzle end back about six inches it is octagonal.
Not an earth shattering detail but in my opinion an attractive bit of artistry.
The other bit that caught my attention was in the cheek side carving decoration. Nice flowing incise carving with small scooped out hollows that gave depth to the floral lobes. Focusing on the carving I noticed the incised line decoration inside those scooped out sections that I had never seen before.
No great epiphanies just small details that should be added to future builds when appropriate.

I visited Rock Ford last month and saw the same exhibit.  For me, I was enthralled with the Beck Silver mounted rifle as found in the RCA books as well as the Edward Marshall rifle.  I do believe that next week is the last of this exhibit.  Well with a visit by any long rifle enthusiast.

I have made arrangements to attend the exhibit next week with the primary reason to see the Rupp rifle in person.  Meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy the interpretation built for me by Allen Martin.

p.d.,
Hopefully you will get an opportunity to get some good detail photos that you can post on here for all of us to see and study who can’t make it to view and study the exhibit.
