Recycling brass scrap

I thought I would share some pictures of how to turn the small bits of left over brass sheet you end up with after cutting patterns for pipes patch boxes etc. It's kind of basic you need a torch, crucible, ingot mold, borax and a rolling mill.   As you can see the steps from the pictures you melt the brass pour an ingot then reduce the thickness in the rolling mill annealing the ingot along the way through the process.

That rolling mill cost me $150 I found it used and the rollers need to be refinished.   My other rolling mill cost me $400  I have used it at least every other day for 35 years at my jewelry store.   If you can find an old cavallin mill or other it's worth the investment it will last a lifetime.

That rolling mill is a pricey item for the average Joe. One could buy a good selection of brass sheet for it's cost. Maybe one could just use a hammer and a flat piece of thick steel plate to flatten a brass cast slug - just saying

I just looked. My rolling mill is going for a bit over $3700 now. When I was a goldsmith it got used every day. I have not used it in a while.
