Backwards sights on original rifles
« on: October 17, 2022, 08:06:32 PM »
I have an original George Fay Bedford county rifle. The rear sight is put on backwards. It really looks like it has always been that way. Is that rare, or common?

It depends on what you mean by backwards.  The sight you are showing should have the muzzle to the RIGHT.

Muzzle is to the left on that picture.

Well, then it is backwards.  I do not think it is normal. Some modern-day commercial makers do that as well, more so with blade front sights..

I concur.  Likely the owner thought it would look better the other way around, and changed it.  But it's been like that for it's whole 'life'...backwards.

I’ll probably leave it as is. Seems wrong to change it now.

Seems WRONG not to make it right. IMHO, of course.

In an interview Sam Hawken stated no matter what sights he put on a rifle the owner would change them.

It’s possible that it got knocked out and the owner didn’t know how it was supposed to be. He had a 50/50 chance but got it wrong, I’d have to put it back right for the benefit of those who will come after us.

I have a contemporary from a pretty good maker that the sight was on backwards, till Stoner turned it around. The irony was I hadn’t noticed for 2-3 years and i was complaining to him about not seeing the sights….. it actually makes a difference!  Who knew 🤷

I’ve only seen this when the sight base was long. A little more distance to the rear sight versus cutting another dovetail when the eyes get old?

My thoughts, also. Probably happened when the barrel was shortened at the breech.

A friend of ours, Ol Bull Dog, had a nice rifle made for him by a guy in Missouri.. the thing we crack up about is the front sight
is on backwards?  He argues its correct?? Pat who has used that gun for demos and such has threatened to fix it. and we wonder how
long it would take him to notice??? :-*
