flask done some time ago
« on: November 30, 2022, 05:48:05 AM »
Made this one when playing with making a matchlock or two.

The flat horn is an original with wheellock spanner.

hardest part for me was drawing the critters in 17th C style, half cartoon looking!

That is very nice work, especially the scrimshaw. Just the other day I was showing my wife photos of engraving around the mid 1700’s of animals and we called them “cartoonish” you captured that look perfectly.
Cheers Richard

Pukka Bundook,
I really like the overall look of the antler flask. What time frame and style gun would the these be most used with?  Can you share how did you made the iron cap and 2 smaller caps? I would like to make some period correct flasks for my matchlocks. Thanks.

Nice work indeed Richard. I too like the period scrimshaw work. How much powder do they hold?

Thank you for your kind words Gents!

Flatsguide /Richard,

Its exciting to me that you see these little figures as I see them!  They are most comical and full of life on the originals. they more or less live and breath.
Please forgive me one and all, if I submit a couple of photos of a matchlock I made ages ago now, but it is for Richard here, and of the funny little animals!

This matchlock was made about the same time as this little flask.

Smylee,
I cannot say now how much it holds, but about 700 grains I Think..a day flask.

TC,
Timewise I'd say early or first half of the 17th century.  Even earlier maybe!  I do have a couple more but don't know where the photos went!
Re iron cap;
Before the antler was hollowed out, the cap was clamped in place over -size, and the edges peened down over the end to form a flange. When snug and antler hollowed out, the cap was drilled and pinned in place.
If I remember right, the small caps on lower limbs were made of antler crowns, flat and flush fitting.
when antler was nicely hollowed out, short wooden plugs were glued in the holes, and flush fitting. these caps were then glued in place, a hole drilled through them, and the iron tacks you see driven through the cap into the wood plug.  I hope this makes sense!
I must also say I have no idea how originals were made! This is just how I did it.

Thank you again one and all.
Richard /Pukka.
Edited to add a thick washer was soldered inside the top cap, and cap/washer threaded for the antler spout.

TC,
Gun lock  for you to get idea of time-frame.  Homemade lock.

Marvelous animal work! Captures the period style.
Here are a couple of ways the stag flasks were constructed...

James,

Thank you so much for the illustrations of how it was done!
they are worth their weight in gold.
I must admit to being a bit surprised how close I came to doing it right!   In essence at least!
Wooden plug, but this was not pegged on mine if I recall correctly, but flat cap pinned on is very much the same idea.
Thank you again James!

all the best,
Richard.

Fascinating subject and magnificent work. I am often so shocked (in a good way!) to see the perfect mastery of skills by members here. Truly a collection of genius.

On mine I used my philosophy, 'if you can't rope to out, rope it in', and roped it out with the use of a contrasting wood. Next one I'l try roping it in and use some of the antler, first I need to get a big deer, no moose or elk around here. I do take donations though.

As for your cartoonish animals, you nailed it Richard, something I always struggle with. Beautiful work!!!!!!

Richard, thanks for the reply and for posting the photos of the flask and the gun. As the name implies ( I think ) first class work in all respects.

I was referring to the caps I applied to the antler stubs.

I really like your flask.  Looks very authentic looking. I recently cut an elk antler to try my hand at making a similar one. I just hope it turns out as nice as yours. Thanks for posting.
