If you look through Kindig's book and in the " York " section you can find several moons of different styles.

I believe the crescent moon was supposed to symbolize a good harvest and abundance in the coming year. I was reading where they are found both in male and female. I don't believe I've seen a female crescent moon. I usually remember the girls. Jim

My notes state that it "symbolizes Mary in the Christian faith, but pre-dates the birth of Jesus". I think I got that from a book on Pennsylvania German folk art. Why is it popular on American longrifles? Because the Pennsylvania Germans were the ones who brought the rifle making tradition to North America.
