A bit of trivia for any who might be interested:
I have two copies of the book, one of which was gifted to me (and is new) and will likely be put on a prize table at some point. My working copy is the fourth edition and the other is the fifth edition. I had loaned my working copy to a friend and used the other copy when I needed to look something up - flagging the pages. My working copy has returned and I just set about transferring the page markers. I was somewhat dumbstruck when I found page 96 in the fourth edition is page 90 in the fifth edition

. The fourth edition has 175 pages whereas the fifth has 167 - and the sequencing of information has been changed around. At this point, I am not sure what information might have been deleted in the fifth edition.

I have a early hard bound edition that has several things the later addions had deleated. One section shows how to stratighten out a crooked started ramrod hole using a drill with a bent collar shank. The cutting section is full 3/8" size but the rest of the drill shank is turned down to like 1/8 ". This portion fits into a bent sleeve shank alot like a flex shaft on a weed whacker. the thinner shaft allows you to drill out a crooked hole. Kind of cool. Guess they figured not many could make one of these so deleted it.

I would have liked to see that. I wonder what other tidbits I might be missing. I would have thought there would have been verbiage on the front cover of later editions to indicate they had been revised. Guess I will keep an eye peeled for an early edition.

So i found my cloth bound addition. The front section says 2000 copies in paper bound, 500 cloth bound. Printed in 1970. Mine says second edition. It is in a smaller format 5 x 9. I thumbed through and found a section that dicussed restorations, reconverting locks to flint and streching barrels as a part of restoration.

YEP, I am definitely on the hunt for a first or second edition!
Keeping the fourth edition and have gifted the fifth edition to a friend.

The edition # should be on the first page, at least it is in editions 4 and 5. According to my copy, the second edition was published from 1970 to 1974 and the third edition was published from 1978 to 1980. I suppose one published in 1976 is more likely to be a second edition than a third.

Just thought I chime in. My hard copy actually has a slightly different title, "Recreating the Kentucky Rifle" with only William Buchele's name. It only has 83 pages but it has many of the same line drawings and the blue prints of the"Golden Age" Rifle and Pistol. Hank

Recreating the Kentucky Longrifle/Recreating The American Longrifle is my favorite book on building longrifles. I seem to have started collecting copies of it. Here are the four I have in hand currently. Thru the years I've given 2 copies away and another is out on loan (permanently?) to a friend.

I still use this book for reference after many years of building, it’s one of the first books I recommend to new builders.

A good number of informative posts here. It looks as though I would be safe in focusing my search on a 1970 printing date since the issue number appears to be absent in earlier editions.

Does your 1973 printing have the sections Dave B describes in replies # 1 and 3? Those are the sections that are missing in my fourth edition.
