Custom barrelmakers
« on: January 03, 2023, 06:49:11 PM »
I have just one more rifle I would like built and I want a non-standard caliber. I presently have rifles in 42, 44, 45, 52 calibers. This last proposed project I want in another 42. Now, recently over the last couple years I've dealt with Bobby Hoyt(he lists over 20 calibers), but after calling him this morning I got an auto message basically saying he's swamped with orders and is not even answering the phone till the end of March! Whoa! So, after this long winded intro, was wondering if anybody knows of other custom barrel makers that will do non-standard calibers?

Charlie Burton at F.C.I. will pretty much make anything you want. He advertising in most B.P. magazines.  Highly recommend his barrels for quality and accuracy...!   Oldtravler

Would you be interested in a odd size small bore ?

I have 2.
 One is a 29 cal 41" long and the other is a 31 cal (.314") 41" long.

The 31 cal is lightly swamped the the 29 is straight.  Both breached.
I'd take $300 for the 31 cal and $280 for the 29 cal.

I'm really interested in either a 42 or 38(42 first choice).
As to Charles Burton, he's cut down a few of the "oddities" on his list. Got a 44 from him years ago, thats now off the list and I didn't see a 42.

Charlie is probably at least a year out, too.
Still waiting on a barrel I ordered last January.

Ed Rayle is a great barrel maker, but I think he is pretty busy right now also?

Every barrel maker has been at least a year out for special orders for the past 20 years. If you want an odd caliber they may not have the reamer laying around and may have to buy one to do one barrel for you.

My advice is to buy every barrel you see that you think you might use whenever you have the money. I’ve got about 12 new barrels in stock and half a dozen original barrels mostly restored to working condition. It’s not hogging when they are for sale at shows and nobody else buys them.

For oddball calibers consider a freshed-out original barrel. I’ve ended up with .37s and .39s and .41s and .43s. Of course length and profile are what they are.
