fuming

Just wondering if anyone has tried ammonia fuming for a gun finish. I know it looks great on Oak but not sure how it would work on maple. I bet Ash might look great that way.

It relies on wood having a high concentration of tannins, oak has this, maple maybe not so much. You might find this article of interest.

Depending on the wood, if it has a low tannin content, you can help things along by making a cup of strong tea, swab it on the wood, and then fume. The tea puts tannin into the wood.
