brass nails for Verner patch box
« on: August 31, 2021, 04:18:25 AM »
Been working on a Verner rifle patchbox, I can't find brass nails he used instead of screws. If anyone knows where to get them or how to make them I'd be a happy camper.

John, I get them from MLBS, Ryan carries them in stock.  If I come down this weekend, I'll try to stick some in my pocket.

Make them the same way you make a copper rivet.  2 pieces of Key stock screwed together, hole drilled & countersunk where they mate. Anneal a brass rod the appropriate size, put in mold & cut 1/16" high, peen it into the countersink. If you don't want the countersink the use a End Mill bit & make a lil flat hole 1/32 or so deep & peen into that.  Ill go get  photo of the mold.
I’ve prob made couple hundred rivets in this. Thought some day I’d make one out of tool steel. This is made with 2 pieces of key stock. That’s std 12 Ga wire from scraps when wiring a house.

I've made small dia brass nails the same way as small silver nails.
With a torch (OA) and appropriate  dia brass rod.
I've used brazing rod to make them. But a softer brass works better as the final product in seating the nail in the countersink and matching color.

I put the torch in the bench vise held securely in place in wooden jaws so as not to damage it.
Light it up.
Place the tip of the brass rod in the flame for an instant and the end of the rod will melt and ball up into a 'head'.
Then clip that off to the length you want for your nail. If you use the right clippers, it will give you a point on the nail as well.

Back into the flame to make a head on the end again for the next nail, clip it off,,,, and on and on.

You will get pretty good after a couple of them and the ball head of each will be quite uniform. ,,and you don't need much of a head.
The rounded spherical shape works nicely into a countersink cut into the part as is,, especially if a soft alloy brass wire stock is used..

I like the forming die idea too. Makes a nice neat fastener.

Where do you guys live? I live way off the beaten path, and I can buy brass, copper, or nickel silver nails at the lumber yard.

John:  when I made my A. Verner rifle in 2011, I used some 1/8" diameter non-ferrous rod which may have been nickel silver, and made nails like Keith has described, but domed the heads rather than make countersink type pins.  I put aggressive teeth on the shafts so they cannot back out too.  Here's a few pics...
You could make them by sawing square strips off a 1/8" sheet of GS.  I have some if you don't.

I could buy a lot of stuff, screws included. I just like to make things instead.

The jig Mr. Lisle has for forming his rivets is ideal for this job...just make a place in it without a countersink.

I have been struggling with making countersunk tacks/nails for some brass inlays for my rifle. I have tried pure 3/32 brass nails in the swage block, 1/16 and 3/32 brass round stock, I must be missing something in the process or have the wrong material.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Brett.

I looked and looked at a couple local big box hardware stores, most of the "brass" nails are brass plated steel, so no good if cut or peened. I did eventually find a container of solid brass brads/nails.

I just cut narrow pointed wedges from the same material the inlay is made from.

A small lathe like the 618 and a 1/8" collet plus 1/8" brass  rod and then you're in the brass nail business :D :D :D.

Google "suppliers of small box hardware" look on their web site and you will find small brass screws and nails of different sizes.
