Caywood Crockett lock.
« on: March 07, 2023, 03:12:14 AM »
Anyone used one of his locks? How do they match up with some of the other big lock makers? I have the plans for the Crockett first rifle and trying to decide between a large siler, chambers golden age lock or caywood copy of the Crockett lock.

I don’t  know what gun you plan to put this lock on, but practically speaking, there are literally thousands of Siler and Golden Age locks out there with proven track records.
My choice would be one of those depending on the gun I had planned.

I'm going to be building my version of Crockett's rifle this spring, and I went with the golden age. It's the closest to the pattern, and can't go wrong with Chambers.

My vote would also be for the Chambers, it's a known quality.

I have no experience with it and have never heard of anyone using one, but it's probably the best lock in the whole world.

I haven not used this particular Caywood lock, so have no feedback on its function. It is however, the closest in style to the lock on the original  Crockett rifle. I was not aware that Danny would sell one of these locks?

It shows to be for sale in his webpage.

Have not used the Crockett lock but, the few Caywood locks I have worked with as well as one on a friend`s smoothbore , have all been very good quality !  I would put them in the league with any modern locks and better than most!  I would use it in a heartbeat! If you get talked out of using it and, decide to sell it, let me know. Thanks

I can;t speak to the Crockett lock specifically but it's a nice looker.  I have used a couple of his left hand round faced english locks, although it's been quite some time, but I found them to be excellent locks and certainly quite a bit better than L&R and Davis locks I've had.  Also they sparked like a mo fo and had good springs.  Castings were very clean.  I would easily rank them with Chambers locks which have always been about as good as it gets without going custom work or full on CNC with Laubach's lock.

I have not used one of the Caywood Crocket locks but I do have rifles with the Caywood Wilson lock. They are smooth an spark real well but my favorite thing about them is the speed. In my opinion they are the fastest big english lock out there. I would imagine the Crockett would be the same. The only downfall I see in using a Caywood lock is that Danny is a one man show an should something happen to him then parts if ever needed could be hard to get.
