In need of an opinionated set of sharp eyes.
« on: March 04, 2023, 08:12:39 PM »
After seeing Flatsguide's nice rifle I'm wondering about my own current project.  RCA Vol 1  rifle # 14.  William Turvey London. When I look at the photos in Shumways book I can only see two barrel keys and two ramrod pipes. Turvey's gun has a two inch LONGER barrel than the one I am using. Can any sharp eyed member here see more than two keys and pipes. I'm wondering how two keys and pipes will look on this short rifle.

Hi Smylee, I think 3 keys and 2 pipes on a 30to 32 inch bbl is appropriate. I went to PA to look at the Turvey rifle and I’ll try to find the photos for you. If I had to do it over I would use keys instead of pins for the simple fact is they look cool and easy to drop the bbl to clean.
BTW my rifle is a Jim Chambers Kit.
Cheers Richard

Thank you Richard for the reply and info. In that my barrel is almost two inches shorter than Mr. T's rifle and about 5 inches shorter than yours, I'm thinking two keys might be enuf and actually look better. I really like the Chambers rifle but he didn't make it in the bore size I wanted otherwise I would have bought one of them.

Hi,
The Turvey rifle has 3 barrel keys and 2 pipes.  It is a bit of over kill and two keys would be plenty.

Thank you also Dave. Over kill on the keys is my thought too especially since my barrel is almost two inches shorter than the Turvey rifle's .

Just my opinion, but with the long expanse of wood between the two keys, makes it look like its missing one.

What you said.It does look like a long length that needs a focal point in the shape of a wedge and inlay.
