Schroyer Like Rifle
« on: March 09, 2023, 04:19:19 AM »
I finished this rifle some time ago with the hope of getting better pictures.  It was built with the idea it could have come from Schroyer seniors shop.  Lock by Stan Hollenbaugh (brass at owners request), 50 caliber, 44” tapered barrel by Charles Burton, cast brass from TOTW and Allen Martin. Wood from Dan Krauss.  I made everything else. The owner lives about eight miles from the site of Schroyer’s shop in Hanover.  Smudges courtesy of me straight from the range.

Nice - looks like it will be a great shooting rifle. Single set trigger - they re VERY nice.
4 keys - easy take down for cleaning. also like the brass lock plate and pan - nice contrast & kinda matches the other side.
Cool beans, as someone here might say. ;D

That’s taking a big bite and chewing it right!  Ambitious and very nicely executed. Can’t see where you could improve much on this build. Has Bill Shipman seen this one yet?

(Added later) Oh now I recall Bill is in Maryland now. He came to mind because he built so many fine Golden Age guns. Great to see another Golden Age rifle here. We get a lot of earlier rifles and Southern Mountain Rifles here; all interesting, but fewer like your build.

Very Schroyerish!  That’s a nicely done Golden Age rifle, lots to like.  I think I have an idea, but if you don’t mind, could you explain how you did the larger areas of the patch box side plates that appear to be stippled?  Best,

Very nice job on the carving. Like Rich said that is a big bite to take and you chewed it well!

Thanks to all for your kind comments.

Daryl - she’s a shooter!

Ed-wriggle engraving.  After a great deal of study in photos I had of the original from the Baltimore show, I figured out that George angled the graver to create an overlap and layered look.  Different!

Rich-I enjoy this area and period of gunmaking.  It’s always a stretch for me.  I got to show photos to Bill last month in Carlisle.  He is stellar with guns of this period.

The stain was Kibler’s tannic acid and my own aqua fortis.  I built up about 5 layers of finish starting with thinned Chambers oil and finish with two coats of Keith Casteel’s oil.

It is a standard sight with low ears.  The photo really is deceptive.
