Butcap oversized
« on: March 10, 2023, 06:56:33 AM »
Working on a Kentucky Flintlock Pistol.

Struggled to find a a butt cap for it (finally found one at MLS).

However, it turned out that the width of the top of the butcap is wider than the thickness of my pistol grip.

SO?    Choices:

1) if you note the sharpie line on the butt cap, I was thinking of trimming the upper 1/4 of the butt cap, to see if I can get to a narrower diameter ... that will match my stock?
2) Punt on the stock buttcap and make one out of sheet brass (?? I've not attempted to do this before... saw a good post on how to do it..)
3) Punt on the butt cap altogether ?

Or what do you guys think?

BTW:  Starting with a new stock is out of question... as I've inletted barrel/lock and ferrules.

Hello , in my opinion i would either build them without a butt plate or look for a new piece of wood  !

Hi,

I would just file the caps smaller like on these pistols.

For me I would cut it smaller and see if it will work for you - you got nothing to lose as it does not work now. I think one made out of brass would look good. I think Rolf had a post on making one in an earlier post some years back. He did a fine job of it and had a great detailed post on it.

Hey thanks for the suggestions.

I do like the look of a butt cap, so think I'll try the trimmed cap approach.

So, I see you have found disadvantage #1 from starting with a blank that was too thin became you glued 2 1” boards together.
