Reference material for original early Dickert
« on: July 01, 2010, 09:50:26 PM »
While not yet complete my first build, I know my second project will be an early Jacob Dickert. I have never seen one in person, but the history has drawn me in. I hope to build a very close copy. Can anyone share ideas on where to find pictures, drawings, etc. of originals?

                                                                                                                                                 Thanks, Bill

Rifles of Colonial America, Vol. II, by George Shumway, has very good pictures of numerous early Dickert pieces. Together with the second volume, it is more or less the standard reference work for Revolutionary and Pre-Revolutionary longrifles.

Bill,  There are nine pictures of an early Dickert contained in the new Kentucky Rifle Foundation Book 'Moravian Gun Making of the American Revolution'  They are terrific close ups along with several full and half length shots. The book and photos are perfect for your project.  Please refer to the lead post under 'Antique Gun Collecting'.

Also - the Log Cabin Shop has Houston Harrison's full size drawing of the superb Dickert with the side-opening patchbox shown in the Shumway book.  I believe that rifle is ca: 1780.

I spoke with Jim Chambers about his Early Lancaster Kit, and he said it was representative of an early Dickert. #49, #50 of Rifles of Colnial America I believe.

I know this is a long shot, but I just called the Log Cabin Shop and they don't have this drawing any more.  Does anyone know a source for this drawing?

Feel free to pm me if you have one to sell, up to $25 for a copy.
