Full Stock Hawken style build
« on: April 09, 2023, 07:22:12 PM »
A friend asked me to build a full stock Hawken around. 36” Bill Large tapered barrel he had. He sent the barrel to Pecatonica to have it inlet into one of their full stock kits. They did not do the lock inlet. Also had to make a nose cap, as the one with the kit did not seem right. I think starting from a blank might have been a better option, but I am pressed for time right now and he wanted the gun finished this spring. I started in February and finished this weekend except for a few light coats of hand rubbed oil and later paste wax.

I used ferric nitrate crystals to stain the red maple. 6 coats Laurel Mountain browning solution and 4 boils to rust blue.

Weight is 10#6 ozs. 50 caliber, 1 1/16”x15/16 tapered Bill Large barrel, 36 1/4” long.

As in life; it’s the journey, not the destination. How you get there matters most.

Nice looking rifle!  Looks like you did a really nice job straightening out the tang and trigger guard castings.
