.0625 wire source
« on: April 01, 2023, 11:45:26 PM »
I need wire for an upcoming class. 1/16 or .0625.

Stiff wire, for pinning trigger guards, ramrod pipes, barrels, etc.

When I google .0625 wire, it comes up in spools.

What is the stiff wire called?

Can you recommend a good source?

Thanks!

Hi,
Look for welding rod or spring steel.  I prefer spring steel rod.

I use 1/16 welding rod for pins.  I do check  the diameter of the rod before the purchase to make sure it is correct and not metric.

I've found music wire in virtually all the hardware stores in southern Wi. Can't say about other places.

Ditto on K&S music wire.  Well worth the trouble to get.  It will not bend under normal use.  It is spring temper and very hard.

For range rods, the thick K&S music wire is indestructible.  Cut it with carbide and use brass outserts.  IF you want to be really fancy cover it with sticky shrink tubing.

Hobby shops, Ace, on line...

I went online and looked for my local Ace that stocked spring wire.

Closest one is 20 mi away. We were near it yesterday and stopped in.

They have a pop corn popper just inside the door!

Anyway, no spring wire...........just letting you know that if it says it is stock, it may not be.

but they have bags of pop corn to eat as you wander around!

I use 1/16" welding rod because I have it. It is also copper plated/washed which reduces the chance of rusting. It's not as tough as music wire but like I said I have it so I use it ;)

I bought a good sized box of music wire. It’s in 16 inch pieces for holding insulation up in basement rafters. It looks like 1/16 but it isn’t its 5/64. Lifetime supply for a few bucks. BJH

I use music wire from Ace.  I ordered it and had it in three days.  It is hard, so where appropriate I anneal it.  Works for me.
