A Rather Nifty Powder Horn
« on: February 16, 2023, 01:47:33 AM »
I decided to keep this horn for my personal collection.
just completed this rather nifty Powder Horn (#29) today. Like most, I had no 'master plan' going into it but I just started at it and the designs came to me. I incorporated a few new scroll elements that I think look good.
I am confident that his horn will compliment your long gun nicely.
It measures almost 12" along the bottom curve, 2" wide and 2.75" high.
The horn has a nice twist and can be worn on left or right, and the decorative scrollwork engraving will appear on top and bottom either way.

Thanks for looking!

You have developed a rather pleasing style.

Thanks guys. It was my first effort to copy some metal engraving designs onto a horn. Just something I experimented with and kind of like the simplicity of it.

Another outstanding horn, Bob.  The artistry is extraordinary.

What kind of wood did you use for the base plug, and if it is stained or dyed, what stain did you use?  the wood has a beautiful texture and color.

Very nice Bob.  I aproach a lot of my rifle projects like you do your horn work.  I have a general idea of what I want to create and then let the project take me on a journey.  I joke alot about my stock blanks talking to me and telling me what barrel they want to be married up with, but I believe it is true.  I do not think you can force an end result out of material that does not want to be utilized for something it was not met to be.  Does hearing my stock blanks talk to me make me crazy, I sure hope not.

Thanks again guys. Notchy Bob- the wood for the bottom plug is Tulip Poplar which I dye and then burnish with paper and finish with shellac or wax or sometimes both.
Dave, yes I can relate to your building approach- sometimes I go into a project not knowing exactly where it will go. I am convinced that if I make a design plan or copy an existing work it could be so much easier. Coming up with designs while working on the horn literally can take hours of drawing and erasing over and over! I don’t know if it’s laziness or just being free- spirited but I never seem to go the preliminary design rout.

It' s a great horn. But for my feeling a little bit too perfect.

But if I could afford such a horn, it would get a very spezial place on the wall

That is a graceful and elegant horn. It would really be a shame to keep it on the stand. Horns like guns are made to be used.

I'm more of a "plain horn" type, but that one really gets me stirring.  Thanks for sharing. I like it a lot.

I really appreciate the comments about this horn/ thank you!
When I was deciding on how to decorate this one I thought I would try copying some metal engraving designs I found on the web. Once I got the two designs done if struck me that the blank field looked just right. “Less Is More” as they say.
It’s one of my favs.
