Need your expert opinion my finish
« on: June 03, 2023, 05:58:25 PM »
I would like your expert opinions on this finish. I haven't seen in person a rifle with a traditional oil finish, so I'm not sure how this compares or how plastic it looks.

I used bill shipman's method of permalyn sealer. Ended up with a lot of lint in the finish. 6 coats after the sealer coat.

I had another thread here https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=76927.0 for dealing with the lint I got in my finish.

Remediated that last night with sanding the whole thing with 1500 wet/dry and oil, then I rubbed the whole thing out with rottenstone and oil on one side and gray scotchbrite and oil on the other (for comparison). They were extremely similar and I think too dull/cloudy looking.

I rubbed on the thinnest bit of permalyn sealer over the whole stock with my finger until it got warm and tacky and then smoothes with pantyhose.

Here is the result below. It might be too shiny for me.  I think, but 1 million times better than it was before anything was done to it. It also seems a little too built up. There's almost no feel of the grain or pores .. it's all filled in. Wondering if I should lightly rub it out again now that it is shiny again.

I’m no expert, but I think it looks great. It has a nice sheen, but not so much as to look like a modern high-gloss finish.

Looks good to me and it will look better when it's assembled.

Thank you both! I gave it a little rub today while it was still a tiny bit soft and it knocked the shine back a tiny bit more, so I am liking it. I am looking forward to getting the rest of the metal finished and screws fitted

Looks great. Don’t try to improve it.  You are finished with it. ( don’t ask how I know this).

Quit while you're way ahead. Or continue and work until you're far behind.

It looks nothing short of fantastic!

It's a tad too shiny imo but that's just me. My motto has always been "make the customer happy". You're the customer. If you're happy with it then the job is finished successfully.

Not an expert opinion at all but I would be glad to achieve such results.

Thanks everyone. My primary goal was to avoid something looking obviously like polyurethane and more like a traditional finish. I don't know if I achieved that, but it is nice looking. Trying to figure out what it should look like based on Internet pictures is a little tough.

Thanks.

I'm not one to brag... Ever. But I am proud of the color I achieved. It's a pretty plain piece of maple, but very pretty after staining.

First stained with turp/gilsonite and then LMF Lancaster maple full strength. Rubbed back color with maroon 3m and sealer when I did the sealing but wasn't red enough. I mixed the LMF stain with my sealer for every build coat.

I think it looks great. Hopefully you were able to draw a muzzleloader tag here in Utah and will be able to hunt with it this fall. I put in for the Uintas but didn't draw this year.

Thanks. I may use it for rifle elk general season on north slope and pretend I'm with a trapping party. I still need to acquire some buck skins.  I always archery hunt deer.

that color is splendid! and the "shine" is really not a shine. the pictures show a diffused glow.
i finished a SMR that really shined. could use it for a signal mirror. rubbed it back one time to much and created flares on the forearm.
didn't make me happy at all but the deer didn't seem to notice.
can't wait to see your rifle all dressed.

Put it all back together. Rub it with a soft piece of burlap.
