L&R lock not getting spark
« on: July 11, 2023, 07:36:55 PM »
Hey everyone I built a 36 cal southern mountain rifle and have been working on sighting it in. The lock was sparking pretty good at first. After 10 shots it wasn’t sparking so I changed the flint. I got 2 shots out of it and no spark. I tried different flints english and french still very little spark. Has anyone else had this problem if so let me know.
Thanks Gary

Carbon deficiency and more foundry fubars.I sent a lot of these Mantons to Germany and always assumed they were carbon deficient case hardened them with Kasenit and so far no reports after 40+years of use in target shooting there.

Contact L&R, they are very good to deal with from my experience.

Hey Gary there are quite a few things that can cause this. Assuming there's no lubrication problem or a binding issue with the frizzen (make sure the frizzen moves freely with the spring off) and that the lock has the same problem when removed from the gun, you may want to first have a look for a tempering issue. If the frizzen face looks a bit scuffed up and whatever sparks you are getting are a red orange (best viewed in lower light) then your frizzen is likely a little soft. If the frizzen is gouging and/or your flints are cracking or dragging on the frizzen face with zero sparks then the frizzen is VERY soft.  If the frizzen face is barely marking at all and your sparks are few and thin, pale yellow in color then the frizzen is too hard.

This is a good starting point. If the problem does turn out to be a tempering issue , there are ways to fix it.

Gary, in addition to the good advice given, I'd suggest removing the lock and see if there's any difference in sparking. If no change, start to eliminate problems one at a time. Making sure there's no binding in the frizzen or tumbler. Would be helpful to see a photo of the lock to view the geometry you have. If all mentioned is good, then you may certainly have a soft frizzen.
