Old General Store Black Powder Dispenser Can
« on: October 22, 2023, 05:28:04 AM »
Since it's another slow day for antique accoutrements, I'm posting an original general store bulk black powder container... the type that sat on store counters to dispense gun powder into smaller containers for the customer. A lot of these old metal containers with a handle and spout were kerosene dispensers when it had a tight metal lid. But some were used for gun powder, as this one verifies.

This container came out of an old hardware store in Berne, Indiana, about 80 years ago, or about the time of WW II. The tag tied to its handle has typed quantities and prices, so the can was in use by the turn of the century or early 1900s. No one probably cares about dimensions on a can like this, but just in case, its diameter is 6" and 13" in height. Note its original metal friction-fit lid is long gone, replaced with a much safer cork. Probably why it's still around!

NOTE:  To make it easier for everyone, the tag reads:

                      BLACK  POWDER

                         2 - - F - - G

                           SA    Net

                           80  c   lb.

                     1/4  lb - -    .25 c

                     1/2  lb - -    .45 c

Cool ;D
Nothing beats the feel of a handmade southern iron mounted flintlock on a cold frosty morning

Thanks for posting.  I love old tin especially 19th century cups.  I've seen similar always thinking kerosene container.  Now, I'm on the hunt. Take care.

I know everybody already knows this, but just in case someone doesn't, these tinware pieces, or early tin cans, are made of thin, tin-plated steel. The bright tin layer helps prevent corrosion of the steel body... like galvanized steel today. I just mention this, in case someone really thinks these old cans are made of tin.
