striping a ramrod

Man, I miss the archives!

I just finished a ram rod and thought I'd stripe it... 

I grabbed my masking tape... and low and behold, I couldn't get it to spiral right...


how do you guys do it?

Also, this ramrod had been soaked in kerosene for a few years..  do you think that'll make much of a difference in the charring process?

It is only my opinon; but I am not too hot for the masking tape style of striping! Since it looks too pat too machine made!!  I slowly turn the rod in my hands while burning in the line.  Not fancy not neat; but looks to my eye at least to be more 'natural'!

I went to muzzleloadingforums.com and found where a fellar was taking wet cotton and wrapping around the ramrod.  then burning the ramrod. 

That's what I did and it looks good I think
