Anyone recognize this signature - More pictures added
« on: August 29, 2023, 04:28:29 PM »
This signature is on a fowler that my brother bought recently.  It looks like it may be 20 - 30 years old, maybe more. But could have been made more recent and just looks older. Seems to be well made.

Oh yeah, that's me, and with that signature it's an old one.  I'd like to see more.  Or maybe not - hopefully not too embarassing!  I'd guess 1990-95 with that mark.

Eric - Here are a few pictures of the fowler. It was hanging in the museum in Cherokee NC and they sold it to one of the tribal members who sold it to my brother.  I don't know how long it was hanging there. There was a piece of leather with a few feathers hanging from the forward end of the barrel that was covering up missing wood from the forward ram rod thimble to the nose.  My brother asked me to replace the missing wood for him.  The bore seems to be in decent shape and the lock works great.  Glad to have found the maker. I thought it may have been you when I saw the initials but wasn't sure.

Holy cow that's an old one.  To the point that I can't remember to whom or where I originally sold it - and usually, I can.  In fact I can look at it and know I made it, but right now drawing a complete blank!

I *suspect* but can't say for certain that it may have been a piece I sold at the old F/I encampment they used to run up at Ticonderoga every June.  I sold a lot of stuff there through the 1990s, really great people and event.

FWIW, the buttplate and guard are probably from Reeves Goehring.  Pipes and sideplate, any other brass, would be me.  Lock is obviously Chambers.  Lock bolts and trigger, trigger plate etc would be made by me.  Stock looks like cherry.  Barrel is probably one of the 20 ga/.62 barrels with the 1" breech that Track sells or used to sell.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I was a duck decoy carver; I didn't keep a log book, for the life of me I don't remember what I made or who I sold it to.

When I started making bows, I started a log book and logged all the build data and who the initial buyer of the bow was.

I get frequent inquiries from people who have bought one of my bows from someone and want to know more about it. What is surprising is how far some of these bows have traveled through multiple owners and are still shooting.

I didn't start a log book on my flintlocks because I didn't plan to sell any of them, I wish I had because I don't have a clue about what year I made them and time is flying by at breakneck speed.

Time flying by.When I was young,it staggered by on broken legs.NOW it travels in a plane made for racing only.Like several others here,I am now closer to 90 than 80 and moving farther along. From Bob Dylan came this."Strike another match and start anew,it's all over now  baby blue" ;D.
