I looked in the Red & Black patchbox books & I don't see a patchbox similar to this one.  I thought maybe Ohio, & looked in those books,nothing really similar.

There are a few small details that point in the Somerset County direction: the turned from trigger, and the filed chevron on the trigger guard. Wonder if it could have been made in that region? Nice rifle, thank you for showing it here.

I should know not to get involved, but who can explain the "interesting" tang inletting on this otherwise nice gun?

Barrel at the breech looks like it's not seated fully possibly why the tang point is so far down, of course, whoever did the in-letting took too much wood from the bottom of the inlet. I just don't thank the maker let this go based on the rest of his work.

Indeed.  And for that to happen, the lock would have to be cut further so the drum wouldn't hold the barrel up.  Sumthin" fishy going on there.

Thankyou for the replies to date .I've owned
this gun for 11 years and not done a thing
with it .I too accept that the breech plug
tang has had some issue in its life
....I didnt think it
right to attempt to correct the tang ....
..may cause more harm than otherwise ?....Just my opinion.
I therefore ask is it something that should be
corrected.....?

I wonder if at sometime during its life, the barrel was removed and subsequently dropped on the tang.  That would explain why the barrel doesn’t appear to be seated properly, and the tang has extra curve.  I don’t think it would be hard to fix.  It surely didn’t leave the builder’s shop that way.

In period work done is ..barrell shortened and possibly a drum replacement at some time.....
I doubt either  would change or impact a faulty inlet of the breech tang ?

The wrist has been busted, you can see the repaired Crack. That is when the tang was bent.

I went back and looked at the wrist and didn't see anything. Are you talking behind the raised panel on the lock plate side?

On the 7th image from top you see clearly a fine line to the left of
the silver thumbpiece inlay .....its a fine scratch that doesnt meet
up with the sideplate panel  (nor continue anywhere and doesnt reappear under the
thumplate inlay and show on RH side of wrist
the total length of the scratch /scar is just over an inch
...its not a broken wrist ....
