Carved Woodsrunner
« on: August 09, 2023, 06:38:22 PM »
This is the carved Woodsrunner that I ordered while I was visiting Jim’s business in June. It went together beautifully and finished up nicely. I did do a little relief of some of the carving in the tang area and contoured the butt stock molding. I don’t think the carving needs anything done to it but I was curious if you relieve the carving. I decided it could be done but not easily. The incise cuts are pretty deep which means you would have to remove a considerable amount of wood to add the relief. The little bit I did was ok but I don’t think it made much difference in the overall quality or design. If you decide to give it a try, proceed with caution. I will have it at the CLA show so come by my booth and take a look.

Looks very nice!  I like what you’ve done.

As to relieving, there’s no reason to think you have to cut to the bottom of the incised lines.  I sometimes hear people concerned with cutting too deep on the perimeter of carving.  This is basically a non issue from my perspective.

Again, looks super nice, Bama.

This is just my personal opinion. I like what you did Jim. But the only thing I don't like on the original carving that comes with the rifle is the hash mark or dash lines. To my inexperience it takes away from the beauty of the overall design. It seems to appear cluttered to me.
Like I said just my take on it.   Oldtravler

I’ve been away to the CLA show and everyone that saw this rifle was very pleased with it. The owner was there to pick it up and he was well pleased with it. I think this will definitely be a great product for Mr Kibler. Thanks Jim

I stained this stock with Aqua Fortis the a coat of Birchwood Casey Walnut stain. The AF has a tendency to turn red maple very dark. The BC helps bring out the red color somewhat. I then finish with my homemade finish of blow and shellac with a little burnt amber tint. This same finish on sugar maple will be much lighter. See the picture below for the sugar maple color.
