Latest Pouch & Horn Project
« on: September 17, 2023, 03:37:56 AM »
Just thought I'd share this set I completed this week; both the horn and pouch taught me a lot over the course of a few months- particularly the horn!
I took a little obvious "bearded bag" inspiration from the McGlamary bag, and a few ideas on construction and general look of the bag from some of of Eric VanAlstine's fine works.  Also benefited from a conversation about banded horns with Ron Hess (what a nice guy) of the Honorable Company of Horners at the Kalamazoo LHS.
The bag is 3-4oz veg tan cowhide, dyed with homebrew vinegaroon and stitched with waxed linen thread.  The last picture shows an external tool pocket that's hidden behind the top layer of fringe.
It made its debut in the field today on opening morning in the squirrel woods here in WI, it worked nicely.
Thanks for looking.

Nice looking set!

Horn and pouch colors are great together.

Also, like the pouch and the hidden pocket on front panel.

Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Regards,

Doug

Nice work on a nifty set. It's great to enjoy a day in the woods with nice traditional gear that you produced much of with your own hands and brain. Enjoy the days afield this fall!

I'm not JBulitz, but he shoots in the same club I do. Smoky Hollow in Sheboygan County. What club are you? Green Bay is generally an hourish drive from here. You are more than welcome to visit our club any time. We shoot the first Sunday of every month, next shoot is this coming Sunday, October 1.
We've got a pretty nice range in the woods right on the edge of the Kettle Moraine.

Steve,
Ditto to what MeliusCreekTrapper had to say, thanks Kyle!  Wisconsin doesn't have the same presence of BP shooters as the eastern states, but glad to know there's enough out there for us to cross paths every now and again.  Might have time make that trip to GB, or hope to see you at Smoky Hollow.
As for everyone else, thanks for the compliments - that itch to pick at projects increases at about the same rate that the temperature decreases in these parts...
