Engraving practice plate for English Rifle
« on: October 12, 2023, 01:17:33 PM »
I have been trying to come up with a design for the trigger guard bow on my Chambers English Gentleman’s Sporting Rifle. something appropriate for 1750-1760 time frame. This is one of them. I have not decided to use it yet but it was good practice.

Hi Richard,
That is very nice and will fit well for the period.

Thanks Dave, now thinking about an appropriate border for it. Thinking of a nick and dot border.
Cheers Richard

Just keep it simple.  Even best guns had fairly simple engraving at this time.

It looks good to me!

I like that, well cut IMHO. I
agree wIth Pukka B, don't make it too busy and your pattern will look good by itself.

BML, I’m using a Lindsey palm engraver and the graver is ground at a 116 degree included angle.
Thanks for the encouraging words...I have learned a great deal from a lot of fellows here.
Thanks Richard

Thanks Curtis. If my work turns out by half as nice as your work I’ll be very happy. I’ve never really engraved anything on a curved surface before so I think I’ll practice on the back side of a spoon first.

I like that a lot. Great idea to practice on a spoon. Curved surfaces do add a new element to cutting but the gentle curve of a trigger guard will not cause you too much grief once you get the hang of it which I doubt will take long. BTW, IMO, you can almost never go wrong with a nick & dot boarder. a good nick & dot boarder is tough to beat.

That is really very nice. The shading on the main flower really gives depth too.

Thanks for the kind words. Cody I think you’re spot on with the nick and dot border, period correct for the time frame of this rifle 1750 period plus it looks good period.
Cheers Richard
