NP Ames marked axe

I got this in a trade and would appreciate any info on it. The head is 5 inches wide.

Neat hatchet. I don't know anything about the axe itself, but Nathan P. Ames (1803-1847) was producing a wide array of metal goods, including axes for civilians and the military, in Springfield in the 1830s before the company moved to Cabotville in 1838.

Seth,
That confirms what I have learned. That marking was used until 1847 when NP Ames died. I'd like to find out whether he had any military contracts for axes.
