SMR Halfstock
« on: January 10, 2024, 08:21:35 PM »
Howdy!
I've been going through my old parts
& came up with everything I need to build a southern style, curly ash halfstock. I'm going to use Dillion furniture & a Moody 7/8" 42" barrel. I have enough ash left over from another build to make a wooden under rib for the 42" barrel.

My question is;  will a barrel that long be style correct or just look too stupid? I hate to cut the barrel off significantly, but will do it if I need to. The full length barrel is going to make the rifle look really long! Forgot to mention that it will be flint (well tuned Durs Egg).

So what do you guys & girls think? Should I forget ahead, cut the barrel off, or consider a totally different style? If a different style, what should I go to?
Many thanks,
Roger B

There were some what’s referred to as 3/4 stock rifles made in the 19th century so what you’re planning is certainly plausible!

I wouldn’t cut it. In fact longer can be better on these in my opinion.
You say southern mountain rifle, so even though it’s not a flint lock I post this well known image as an example.

Thanks, all!  As it is, my stock is going to be less than a 3/4, but it is really curly!

Not an SMR, but 42” x 7/8” barrel.

Roger, I just posted some pictures of a Henry Wright Half stock, with a 42 1/2" long barrel.
Click on this link and it should take you there. https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=79774.0

I have an original half stock percussion rifle with a 42-inch barrel, upon disassembly I discovered the barrel had been shortened about 2 inches.

;) ;)... I had an original Greene Co. Tennessee rifle half-stock striped maple, with a 47" barrel with hickory wood under-rib... it might have been a broken full-stock that was shortened to half-stock... CCF
