what i do on gun stocks i refinish is put them in water that is almost too hot to put my hands in that is laced with oxy cleen, it will pull all the color and oil out of the wood,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

All of the rifles I built and stained with aqufortis have been getting progressively darker over time, I neutralized all of these stocks after I stained them, it didn't seem to make any difference. Fortunately, I like dark rifles.

I like the dark look. I would use something fine and rub back the wear areas as has been suggested here. Leave most dark. God Bless, Marc

I don't think so. I have 2 guns that I built 30 yrs ago that I stained w/ Wahkon Bay Aquafortis and neither one has turned black. Both are reddish brown curly maple. I don't think that either one has darkened much if at all. I really don't remember, but I doubt that I neutralized either one after they were stained. Not that it matters, but they are both also finished with Permalyn, which has held up well also. YMMV.
