Hello Gentlemen and Lady/Ladies,
Is this a pan bridle? If so, what does it do? Thank you.

Early French version of a pan bridle. Hard to say what it’s doing!

A pan bridle uses steel/iron from the pan. This one gains its support from the frizzen spring screw rather than the pan, and would work well.

Since the frizzen must pivot from the upper screw, that lower screw/spring setup must compress very tight?

Gentlemen, thank you all. Yes, French, St. Etienne M1717 according to the website...so does it support the frizzed? Is it to keep the frizzen screw from shearing off? Again, thank you.
