Help identify JPMoore rifle
« on: April 20, 2021, 03:10:02 AM »
I am looking for any information anyone can give me on a old JP Moore rifle.  It is a shorter rifle, octagonal barrel and looks to be larger than a .50 cal, maybe. 577 or .58.  We are trying to determine if it was a calvalry rifle or what it's use was.

Checkered wrist, back action lock. iron box wonderfully engraved! Sure looks to me like an N.Y. state gun and if memory serves, that is where Moore worked. great gun in as found condition. Just noticed the gold breech bands; nice, very nice. Can't really tell if barrel has been shortened or not but it would have to been cut at the front end as the bands are in place.
I would conjecture that this could have been for a woman or a youth. Or perhaps the owner wanted a friendly gun to shoot. Not a lot of weight in this one on the front end. My take is that is was built this way and was a good hunting rifle. Condition is very good,
