I have bought a lot of the usual books over the last five years and gotten a lot out of them, but I learned more in ten minutes at Ian Pratt and Ken Gahagan’s gun building seminar when all of a sudden there were 20+ rifles and fowlers laid out on a table where you could see and compare. The other light bulb moment was when I got my Kibler Colonial and compared it to the stock from a less - well profiled kit.

Pics are great but hands on is tough to beat.

A squillion dollars?  I'll have to check my IRA....I don't know if there is such a number!! (Funny term though, I'll use it in the future.)

I did my first build without any reference book. Then I bought this https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/303/1/BOOK-GGC and determined it was the best $44 plus shipping I ever spent.

There are more books that you may like "more better" but I can assure you this one is worth the read and will save you time and money on a build.

And after I built another rifle ....post book.....I went back and re-did the first build as it looked very much like a block of wood with a barrel.

I didn't find Kaufmanns book very illuminating.  Gave my copy away.  I find Rifles of Colonial America Vols 1&2 Shumway very good if you want photos large enough to see and most of the dimensions you would need.  I also like the DVDs the Kentucky Rifle Foundation very good, but you will need several to get most of the schools.  They may have them on thumb drives or such by now.

I've always found it interesting that when you "straight line" the comb, different builds will give you different "directions".
