This is one of which I was referring to.
The other is on a single bl. flint fowler and is about the same length.

Hi,
The commercially made hook and tangs are long so they can be cut and filed to whatever shape the maker desires.  The Hawken tangs are long with a unique shape to work with the long trigger plate used on those guns. It seems there are almost no appropriate standing breeches you can buy anymore except from the Rifle Shoppe.  Rice barrel company makes them but the tang on their design is too short.  Here are some that either use a tang screw and another coming up from the bottom and threading into the frame or a tang screw and a crosspin on the bottom.  Note, the tang screw is located toward the rear of the tang.  In combination with the bottom anchor, that arrangement is very strong and prevents the tang lifting up if you have a hook on the barrel that fits snugly.

Interesting designs. Appears the ones with just one screw, the screw location is more towards the front (which makes sense because of the recoil) and the one's with a tang screw plus a TP screw locate the tang screw more towards the back.

After looking at these pics I cut my tang down to two inches. Because this will be a 45 cal it won't have the recoil of say, my .50 or .54 cal so I'm thinking just one through the tang and into the TP will suffice.

But thank you all for the post and pics. Very helpful and informative.
