MLBS Dovetail cutting tool for sliding wooden patchboxes?
« on: March 11, 2024, 02:19:47 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the dovetail cutting tool for sliding wooden patchboxes from muzzleloader builder supply and what they thought of it? Thank you.

No I haven't used or seen it but I made one from scrap wood and a piece of 1084 and a 1/4" nut.

That is nifty and totally why I have a 3D printer. Better still, I can make a reverse one for shaping the key.

Is this used to cut the dovetail or the mortise or both? If for the dovetail, it’s a scraping action? Thanks.

Years ago, Tom Curran made a dandy plane for cutting dovetails on lids.  Not sure if anyone remembers or if photos are still around.

I remembered it too, it was awhile ago and it took me awhile to find it:

An option would be to scribe bottom with something like a Stanley router plane, hog down with a flat chisel and then finish with 3-cornered file with one safe edge & chisel edge ground on the end.l

I have one I purchased for a gun I built in 2014. Very easy to use and cuts box and lid. Works like the one B. Barker posted a photo of.

Yes mine is used as a scraper. I made the bit to scrape on the side and bottom that way it can be used to get the right depth for the lid in the stock.
