Powder box

I’m always interested in how people store powder. I was in the millwork business 40 years and set aside interesting wood occasionally. I made several boxes out of wallaba wood. This is a South American hardwood with a class A fire rating and is extremely decay resistant. The boxes are made with loose lids and loosely nailed together. I could pull them apart. I don’t know how well it insulates, but I know it is near impossible to burn. I guess you could always put a welding blanket over it for additional protection. I used to keep it under the bed.

I just keep mine in cardboard boxes in my hobby room.

My powder,black and gray are on a shelf in the shop building over 100 feet from the back door to the house.Storing ANY powder in the house is frowned on by insurance companies and they can quickly cancel home owners policies and WILL if they find out.Primers and percussion caps also in the shop.

I keep it in my shop in a far corner from the house. I’ve never been too worried about it blowing up, but the insurance is a concern in case of a fire. My boxes or any other container is probably not going to make it ok.

TenMile - that is a nice powder storage box and I got a smile on my face when I saw your selection and quantity of powder - it is almost the same as mine.
I keep my powder in a 3/4" thick-walled plywood box with a hasp on it. It is stored in an outside shed away from the house.

ANY home owners policy worth having will exclude any explosives and should have a paragraph dedicated to such storages of powder.
I have a small machine shop about 100 feet from my house and all primers,caps and black and smokeless are stored there.
In the event of a fire and explosion with injuries at the house you will find out about storing any explosives or detenators(caps/primers).

I have a friend who is a builder, collector and shooter. His house burned and destroyed his shop along with rifles, accessories and powder horns. Many of the horns had BP in them and during cleanup were found burned but none had exploded. Would have been different if there was smokeless powder involved.
