Does any member here make a wooden mallet head with the scrap leftover from the maple stock?

Good idea.....I use my scraps for ball boards, file handles, blocks to hold small parts for engraving, cushioning from clamps so the clamps do damage or mar other surfaces, tapping blocks for inlay work....

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Waste not, want not. I’ve always saved fair pieces of material and made sundry items. It can get out of hand though.

I have made several from scraps. The first was turned all in one piece, head & handle. Worked well for about 5 years then the handle broke off, I assume from all the shock over the years.

I don’t have a wood stove. But I do have a gas fireplace that turns on with a flick of a switch.

I usually save my scraps in a big cardboard box, and use what I need for whatever project comes along.  But when rendezvous time comes around, what hasn't been picked over by my friends goes into the stove in my tent.  Burns hot!

A few years ago, I asked for fancy cutoffs to make bow tillering tools to donate to a St Jude auction. The generous people here sent me 45# of cutoffs, I paid shipping.

To date with these cutoffs I have raised $3500 for St Jude on this same auction which is held yearly and I still have a lifetime supply of cutoffs left.

Here is one of the fanciest tools I made from this wood, amazing figure. The pencil marks the high spots in the limb where wood needs to be removed to get the limbs bending properly.

Eric,
Could you explain how the tool works?  Is the lower surface slightly concave?

My wife was unimpressed with the bullet boards and powder horn plugs that I made from scrap, so I went another direction.  It has taken more than a couple stocks, but I have assembled several of these handy tables.  And, I no longer get flak about the cost of good gunstock wood.

You could make one of these....  All the wood parts are stock scraps.

Richard, I believe it was a Gramercy like one of these: https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/GT-BOW12.XX

Let me see if I have a note in my records of where it came from and I will post it if it is different.
