Club butt fowler based on 2 originals mostly finished
« on: May 17, 2024, 04:23:45 PM »
I’ve shown this in progress but thought to post the complete gun separately. It’s based on 2 New England fowlers (CB-6 and CB-7) in Grinslade’s book on colonial fowlers. These have symmetrical double cheekpieces and unique carving resembling nautilus shells. Barrel- 39”, 20 ga Colerain turkey choke. The lock was assembled from The Rifle Shoppe castings of a Wilson English lock. I formed the buttplate of sheet brass, made the side plate with silver wing inlays, trigger, thimbles, front sight, and nosecap which fastens to the front underlug, and must be removed to take the barrel from the gun. First club butt and carving of this sort for me. It was a fun project and a good turkey gun. I’ll engrave the side plate soon. When I’ve done zero engraving for a year I like to practice a bit before setting graver to metal.

Nifty. You did a great job with that.

I like it! Nice work on this.  How is the forward butt plate return tang secured? All in how much does it weigh? The turkey's are running a muck the next county over so your project has me thinking of getting one together. What fun.

Wow! I've always really liked that gun from the book, you did a great job on it! Did you engrave the lock plate?

Thanks fellas. The gun weighs 6.88 pounds on my fishing scale. The lock plate was cast with the engraving in it - remarkable detail that endured careful polishing. The forward part of the buttplate is secured with one hook, than after that proved insufficient, with a nail or 2 made from sheet brass. It’s no longer removable!  The nosecap is a second try. Once I figured out it had to come off every time the barrel is removed, it became clear it had to sort of snap into place but also be free to snap back off, all the while staying tight against the barrel at the muzzle.

Great job, Rich. I really like everything about this gun. Those nautilus shells are really nice.

I liked this gun in the Grinslade book. Mostly I like the folk art carving on the stock. Also it is ambidextrous. Nice job.

Well done Rich!  Do we get to see this gun first hand at our woods walks?

Well done, looks like something I'd like to have, especially after seeing what it can do.

That’s so unique from anything I have seen before! The carving looks almost Scandinavian to my eye. And from another post I see you bagged a gobbler with it already! How cool 😃
