Fresh off the bench
« on: May 29, 2024, 10:18:13 PM »
Newly finished, a nice handling halfstock. Barrel is a  Green Mountain 45, thirty six inches long and  7/8's across the flats. The lock is an assembled mountain Siler that was built from my dear friend Henry Overmeyer (no longer with us) and to me that makes it special.

Normal brass hardware, the inlays ( german silver), where fashioned from some interesting ones I had seen on originals that I spied while at the Association of Ohio Longrifle Collectors show recently in Marietta Ohio. The stock and barrel was supplied by the customer. The curl is pretty nice and I think I did a good job of exposing it.

Beautiful work.

I`m not a particular fan of half-stocked percussion rifles, but this is a real beauty.  This is a class act....everything about it is first class.  Congratulations on your fine workmanship! :)Wormey

I like it John. It looks like many of the old half stocks I've seen made east of the Mississippi.

Thanks for all the compliments. A while back I was at an OGCA (Ohio Gun Collectors Association) show and the show had a theme for it, the theme was muzzleloading rifles, pistols and their accutroments. There was a fantastic display of rifles made by David Leonard. When I saw those I wanted to make a rifle that would emulate or get the feel of what Leonard would have made. I think I did so. There is a website about this man, simply type David Leonard Ohio rifles and you can view his work

I like how unapologetic the inlays are. Dave hit the nail on the head, you've always made a nice gun but recently the work you've been putting out is on a whole nother level.

A good 1/2 stock, like this one, or a Vincent or a good copy are works of art. No its not a JP Beck or John Armstrong nor are they supposed to be. Well done they are a stand alone piece of 19th c. art. Like the earlier rifles they are a product of there time. Not ALL the late rifles are clunkers and/or with inlays that seemed to have been loaded into a cannon and shot at the stock.  I like this rifle a lot.

I can imagine Donnie will love it and I'm envious. Although my grandfathers 36 cal flintlock was a full stock original Ohio Vincent this rifle is it's rival. Good job on the build.

Bob, it's funny that you brought up Bill Cody because a couple days before you made that comment I told John after seeing the finished rifle that it gives me running around my backyard playing cowboy with my air rifle as a child nostalgia!

Randy, I haven't taken possession of it yet but I already love this rifle to death, it's particularly special to me because John is a close friend of mine. I was talking to him a few years back and I said "John, you make a fine rifle, I'd like to own one." So he says what did I want him to make and I said a rifle, and he said what kind of rifle, and I said a Gaeckle Gun. I said there's a lot of people out there making guns but I want one of your guns and only you know what that looks like. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. I'm pretty sure he was sneaky about it and brought it up to the Log Cabin shop a time or two to get my reaction to it and see if it fit me while it was in the works?

John, that curl is electric, you did an outstanding job exposing it! I had to reread your post there because I wasn't sure if that was the stick I gave you or you had to use something else. For context, I got a great deal on several high curl half stock blanks from a member here a while back. One of them in particular was geared for an advanced builder, the board was tiny, enough to make a rifle out of but not much else. I decided it'd be best to give that one to John and I'm really happy I did.

This rifle is much more conservative in the amount of inlays than most of the ones that I have seen of the period. The Inlay behind the cheekpiece is very nice.
Mid century 'Ohio" rifles are not everyone's cup of tea, but this one is very appealing. Good Work!
