Source for extra Long Range Rod.
« on: July 25, 2024, 03:51:56 AM »
I just bought a fowler with a 54" barrel. Does anyone know of a source for a range rod that would work? I can make one, but I would rather just buy one, if possible.

I had one custom made for my 54" barreled gun by a range rod maker in Florida. Stainless steel with Maple wood grip and brass muzzle guide. Excellent work and very reasonable price. He thread the end for me to 10/32 and he even included a cleaning jag on mine.

Yes- his name is Larry and he's in the Muzzleloading Forum;  flconch53 . He doesn't have a website, just relies on word-of-mouth and at BP events.

I have never purchased a range rod. I buy 5/16” diameter  precision ground 6061 aluminum round stock from McMaster Carr in 6 foot length. I use a chain saw file handle from Ace Hardware. Tap one end cut the other end off to length to fit in the file handle. I buy a brass 5/16” muzzle protector from TOTW. Hope this helps. Jerry

Taylor and I found a local source for 5/16" aircraft stainless steel. I bought what I thought I needed in length for a " long rod". Drilled and tapped one end for 10/32" and epoxied a birch branch on the other end for a handle. This is easily long enough to clean a 35" unmentionable barrel without hitting the folded tang sight as well as more than long enough to clean a 50" ML barrel.
