black bear pack back mount
« on: August 14, 2024, 11:28:28 PM »
Last May I shot a black bear in Northern Saskatchewan with an original .73 cal. English Sporting Rifle that is not marked with a name.

Round ball pushed with 86 grains of 2F Swiss.

Got the hide tanned and just finished putting it in a backpack mount.  Something a little different and does not take up as much real estate.

It looks compact, no wasted wall space.  ;)

That is unique. Good thought process in building that.
That load likely was running between 1,100fps to 1,200fps.

More particulars on the hunt would be nice. Bullet placement and performance? Range of shot and weight of bear?  ;)

Nice write up and a lovely mount. I’ve always wanted to try the pack mount but most of our species here don’t physically suit it.

Art,
To make it more PC, you need to tie it on with a traditional diamond hitch instead of just winding the rope around it.

Well, I did not leave my vertical rails on the pack long on the top and the side cross members proud on each side to do this.

Thought about figuring out something that looked better than what I have it as I am not proud of my tie job.

Looks like a good sized bear wrapped up like a papoose.  Unique display.

That's cool. I've seen some deer mounts that way, but not bear.

Thanks

I cant take credit for the idea but I thought it would look a little unique on the wall.  Plus, it takes up a lot less space than a whole pelt.

I looked around for a pack that I thought would work but ended up just making my own.

It is just leaning against the wall under the TV currently.   Need to figure out where it gets hung.

Depending on the size of the Bear of course, a regular Bear rug can take up a lot of room on a wall. If you just hang the tanned hide up by the nose on a peg you could probably get 4 or 5 Bears in the same space. Your idea takes up no wall space as is and is kinda unique.

I have a blonde grizzle pelt on the living room wall all stretched out and really did not need another bear displayed in the same way.  Plus, this simply was not a big bear, and the pack mount I thought was a great way to honor and display the bear.
