brass lockplate finished
« on: July 02, 2024, 05:22:46 PM »
Hello

After wandering for a while and other activities, I started
making a flintlock again, this time with a brass lockplate.

Some more later.

Adrie

About 50 tears ago I made a full size lock with a brass plate and i remember dovetailing a steel strike area for the cock to hit,
That brass was soft and it was a request by the owner of the plate.I may have used a hardened sleeve where the tumbler turned
but not sure about that.

I'm going to do my best.

Bob

The dovetailing is a good suggestion
I will keep it in mind.

Hello

Another step further, only the screw head might be slightly larger, higher.

I've built several brass lock plates. Attached is a link to my website showing the process I use to make them. Hope someone can use this information.

Very small, very tidy flintlock, Adrie.  And beautiful work.

Hello

Today I finished the lock.
It is always a search starting from an image.

Looking at your fingers it's easy to see you put in a lot of work to make it come out great!

Very, very nice. I got to ask - how do you hold the material to file it to shape and also to drill the holes and the rest of the process?

Maybe it was in the late 1960's I made a full scale cap lock with a brass plate. It was made from 1/4" x 1 and 1/4" x 5" brass bar stock and had a hardened and tempered sleeve for the tumbler and the screws,4x40's were screwed into 8x40 steel liners in the plate that were staked in place..This was a one of a kind and I had forgotten it until now.Making a miniature is a skill set I never had but I do admire those who do.
As I recall, that one off brass lock was a Goulcher pattern with a steel hammer.

Thanks for the support.

The first a lot of patience, I let a screw fall out of my hands six times.
I often take the lock apart and try it on.
I started with a grinder and big files.
I bought a cheap set of files, which are very sharp.
For the rest I use 180 grit emery cloth and tear strips to size.
It rubs with all the curves.
I sand all the metal with sanding belt 180 emery cloh then waterproof 800 then 2000.
Drilling the tap hole is 1.2 mm taps 1.4 mm and 1.5 mm for penetration.
Previously I made the springs from car spring leaves, later I emailed a spring company for some metal I couldn't buy. but I got two pieces of metal
this is so soft and works so nicely of course hardening and tempering.
