Late flintlock English Game gun
« on: August 02, 2024, 10:05:59 PM »
Here’s one I’ve been working on for quite a while.
Resisted checkering, well, cause I’ve never done it before. Checkering is a biotch, and very labor intensive.
So here’s the rundown.
Rice 58cal swamped barrel with Rice Nock breach. English walnut, iron rust blued, Kibler late English lock.
Still need to make ramrod.
Just discovered that I got in a hurry, and never engraved the trigger plate finial.

Nice!
I have a stock blank in english walnut, half stock length that would make a great looking one of these, not sure I have the talent though. :-)

Looks good Andy! How long is the barrel? You did a lot of things on this that you hadn't done before. The rust bluing looks great.

Fine job IMHO and will look even better with the rod in place. These English and English styled guns are my favorites.

That barrel is 31”, plus 1” for the Manton hooked breech.
Yep, lots of firsts, 1;2 stock, English walnut, akinet root stain, checkering, rust blue, Ebony nose cap.
Last 3 coats of finish have a little black added for some age.
Too hot to shoot it right now, maybe October.

Beautiful work,  finish and lines Dane
Were such checkering  borders common on English guns?

Daryl,
You know, I’m not sure. I just knew I needed something to clean up the edges.
Didn’t want to make my own tools, ( it was my first try) and didn’t want to add that to the mix.
Used 1/16” tools,  and didn’t finish the peaks so they stayed flat topped. The only border tools were this one, and a concave one. Thought this one would be easiest.

Hi Dane,
Great job!!  It looks just like it should.  Your checkering came out great.  The gun should be a really good shooter.
