Staining and Finishing
« on: September 08, 2024, 06:55:53 PM »
Is this still available? If so builders need to buy and read it. There material here that was not in the considerable amount of material Bill had sent me over the years or I missed it or forgot.
Bottom line is that most modern finishes are pretty poor on a gunstock and often require far too much work to get a finish. And as I may related before at one time I was doing 2 walnut stocks a week and the stuff we were using (Homer Formbey”s Tung Oil) at the time looked good but required wet sanding with the finish to get a fill. HUGE pain in the butt and then all the petroleum solvent fumes. If I did walnut stocked guns I would do a video but I consider American Walnut far inferior to GOOD Maple as a gunstock wood. Several reasons.

Modern finishes do suck…. That’s what started me on doing hours of research and experimenting.

I can finish a gun stock in 75% less time using original 18th century formulas that is far superior to modern finishes. I got incredibly lucky finding some original recipes in 18th century books, after testing numerous formulas, I picked the ones that worked the best. After numerous people asked what I was using I figured I’d offer it to others wanting an easy, authentic finish. Every customer has raved at the results from 30+ year master builders to carpenters.

Bill Mende gave the shop,  the rights to publish it, that used to put on the 3 day show at Kempton. Check with them

I knew Dixons had it but I was to lazy to try the number.
Will pass this on to guild members.  Thanks.
