Next of the "Historic River Series" bag sets.

The wonderful folks at the "Makers Bolg" have posted up a bit more of my work today. "The Holston"...

It has a fancier though primitively carved horn accompaning a simple bag, knife, measure and vent pick...

Was just looking at your latest and love the bag.  Your horn is equally nice.  I notice the horn is a 'natural' left side carry and you show to be carried on the right?  I know these were done in the past too. 
Great job on the 'kit' and the story too.

Very nicely conceived and turned out.  The history makes it all "happen" for me.

What did you use to stain/color the leather.  It doesn't look like the darker vinegar stain, but I really like the results.

In a word, Superb!  The entire kit has "soul".  It all looks vaguely familiar to me... but I digress.  Just having a past life experience.

Nice work Tim and I really like the type of thinking and background you put into the series type of sets. A super way to pay homage to the past with contemporary work.

A beautiful set, Tim. I really like the horn with the "bulge" in the throat for the strap. It really gives the horn an interesting look. I have seen several originals made that way, but rarely see a modern horn carved in that fashion.

The cane powder measure is a nice touch as well. I had not thought about it, but I suppose bamboo was around then. Or is it another type of cane?

Hi Jeff, thanks for the good words on the set, I sincerely appreciate them...

about cane measures...believe it or not, there are bamboos that are native to north America, and which were used by our pioneers for many things...I have always liked the simplicity of cane/bamdoo measures, and though you dont see the old ones too often, when you do they sure are neat...

Most of the river cane I have been lucky to find, is green in color, but dries back to a gold-ish to red-ish brown, and is used up as quick as I find a piece floating in the river, there must be some growing up the Illinois from where we live, cause I will sometimes find a cane or two when "beach combing" the river sides ...though some of the old bamboo I currently have in stock (salvaged from broken antique cane ploes etc) might have grown further east, or even further south ...( alot further, like asia or south america?) I think it makes up into good servicable measure very much like the old ones...
