beaded powder horn strap
« on: October 14, 2024, 11:08:17 PM »
Does anyone out there make beaded powder horn straps. I'm currently making an 18th century style powder horn with silver mounts and scrimshaw and would like to purchase a strap that is worthy of the horn

Thanks all

You hardly ever see them because made in the correct way, and correct width, they are just miserably heavy. Also to be correctly made they should be sewn to a buckskin strap, which only adds to the weight. I visited an old buckskinner once and saw a beautiful scrimshawed powder horn and beaded strap hanging on the wall in his living room. I asked him why he never used it. He told me he used it once and swore never to use it again, he said with the horn full of powder the rig weighed about ten pounds.

The weight would all depend upon what kind of design. Simple white floral lines would weigh much less than a fully beaded plains type strap. And the beadwork could be on wool, backed with cotton or linen, would not have to be leather.

PM me if you'd be interested in having one made.  I have a few beaded pieces in the cont. Accoutrements section, ex. Beaded butcher sheath.

As said above, a floral design would not weigh too much. Here is a beaded shooting bag that I did.
