I know it's been asked before, but who supplies quality screws, bolts and the like?

Recently I ordered some un-plated wood screws from blacksmithbolt.com. They have a good assortment. The screws were ok, but the steel seemed on the soft side and I had to be very careful to not bugger up the slots. I think I’ll go back to using Muzzleloader Builder’s Supply for my bolts and screws though. MBS seems to be as good or better than any.

Blacksmith Bolt always seems to have wood screws, but is very lacking in machine screws that would be useful for locks and tangs. What I have ordered from them has come in a prompt manner though.

Soft screws are probably 12L14 which was developed for rapid production of screws and threaded rods,When I was making locks I sometimes sent a cross screw with an 8x32 thread or 2 of them if it was a flintlock and if the mainspring was too close to the front
of the lock plate a 6x32 was sent.The slots were mostly a sharp "V"instead of a machined slot.I have no plans to restart making screws
because the perceived value is nearly zero.

Alter an existing screw driver or make one that fits the slot in the screw.I do not own an unaltered screw driver in any size.

I've purchased my screws from both Blacksmith Bolt and Muzzleloader Builder's Supply and have had no complaints on either. I do case harden all my bolts and screw heads regardless of where I buy them. ;)
